HealthWorks Rehab & Fitness History

HealthWorks Rehab & Fitness was founded in 1979 in Morgantown, WV as Morgantown Physical Therapy Associates (MPTA) by Sam Kegerreis and John C. Spiker. Sam moved on to new endeavors in 1980 and John persisted in his pursuit to provide quality therapy services to the surrounding communities.

MPTA grew in numbers over the next ten years which necessitated four location moves in the Morgantown area and the hiring of many more outstanding clinicians. Programs were founded upon a sports medicine approach to musculoskeletal injuries with emphasis on a functional return to activity as soon as possible. This concept has continued to be developed and remains as our treatment philosophy today. The foundation was laid.

Jack Brautigam joined the MPTA "team" as a partner in 1989. This was also the time that MPTA began providing inpatient physical therapy services located at Monongalia General Hospital. We continue to provide this service today. In 1995 MPTA contracted with Mon Health Systems to provide a variety of therapy services, i.e. physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy to residents at MonPointe Continuing Care facility, a service we continue today.

The desire to serve the surrounding communities gave birth to our four satellite offices; the first in Buckhannon, WV (1990), the second in Smithfield, PA (1992),the third in Fairmont, WV (2000),the fourth in Blacksville, WV (2005), and the fifth in Cheat Lake, WV (2006).

MPTA encountered many changes through the years with unprecedented growth. In November of 1997 MPTA merged with West Virginia University Hospital and Monongalia Health Systems and became HealthWorks Rehab & Fitness. HealthWorks later became partners with St. Joseph's Hospital in Buckhannon, WV in 2000.

Our "home clinic" is located in Morgantown, WV where John C. Spiker still serves as President/CEO and Jack Brautigam serves as Vice-President.

Today, HealthWorks continues to be dedicated to the needs of our surrounding communities. With a cooperative spirit, we continually evaluate these needs and strive to fulfil them with the implementation of new programs.

We look forward to a future providing many more years of exemplary service in rehabilitation and fitness for the benefit of the community.

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to live his life as a ransom for many. Mk 10:45
